The book of Hebrews and Hebrews: The nearness of King Jesus, books 11 & 12

This winter I FINALLY had the opportunity to do a group Bible Study with other ladies and I chose to do Hebrews, the Nearness of King Jesus for various reasons.  I knew Lisa was a great storyteller and she is also an amazing Biblical scholar.  And just downright fun!  I'd love to be her BFF!!

This study was a little tricky to do, only because the weekly sessions you do at home were not broken down into Day 1, Day 2 but it all worked out in the end.  I really enjoyed the videos and the homework and it made me understand the book of Hebrews a lot better.

Of course, the book of Hebrews itself is such an amazing book!  What we learned is that basically this was more than likely a "sermon" preached to the local Hebrews who were having a really hard time wrapping their mind around the whole Jesus thing and how it fit into what they knew and understood about God and rules and laws and all that.  I can totally relate as I read through the Old Testament!

One thing I took away from this was about Hebrews 11, the hall of fame for the heroes of the faith.  Not that I thought it was all about praising those listed, but this study made me realize, like the cartoon picture above, that JESUS is the real hero.  He chose to use all those broken people who had been redeemed.  He doesn't just use "the good ones" but actually looks for and uses the ones who feel the most unworthy.  In the session 6 video Lisa says something to the effect of, "We are not like Cinderella who deserves the prince; but like the ugly stepsisters, who don't deserve the prince but He chooses them anyway."

The Hebrews Member Book includes 6 weeks of homework that can be completed between group sessions and leader helps. Homework can be completed at the learner's pace as it is not in daily format. The Book of Hebrews is a rich, dense section of Scripture that can intimidate the most scholarly biblical student. But Lisa Harper makes digging into Hebrews fun and doable, as only she can, without losing an ounce of depth. Hebrews was a sermon for a specific people and culture in the midst of martyrdom and persecution, but is also so relevant for us today, reminding us to continue walking toward Jesus regardless of our culture or our circumstances. Join Lisa as she journeys through this bridge between the Old and New Testaments to get to the heart of the matter: Jesus is our accessible King. He is not a faraway God, but an up-close Redeemer who draws near to us. Hebrews helps women make the connection between God the Father and God the Son and reminds us that Jesus is supreme, but He is also compassionate, empathetic, and loving to no end.

The Icing on the Cake, book # 10

Yet another hi-larious tale from Janice Thompson and the Weddings by Bella series.  These characters are so real it makes me think I am right there in Galveston the whole time I am reading them.  Bella and her family always make everyone feel right at home.

This book focuses on Scarlet, the cake-baker extraordinaire, who is having trouble with her weight, her love life (or potential lack of it!) and her Aunt Willy.  She has too much on her plate but somehow manages to plan and orchestrate a fundraiser Talent show at her church, help her best friend put the finishing touches on her wedding (while baking her wedding and groom cakes all after midnight the night before), be on a Cake Competition show for the Food Network, and fall in love with a wild bad boy in the mean time.  Think your life is boring?  Take a break and jump into Scarlet's!!

This is book #2 in the Weddings by Design series.  Bella's story is told in the Weddings by Bella series.  I highly recommend ANY of them!!!

Scarlet Lindsey's aunt Wilhelmina may be Texas's most popular cake baker extraordinaire, but she's also getting on in years. When Scarlet decides to take on the role of cake decorator at her cranky aunt's bidding, it's just the beginning of a series of misunderstandings and mishaps that will lead her to compete in a cake challenge on national television--and might even lead her to finding true love.

Fan favorite Janice Thompson is back with more wit, more weddings, and more of what her readers love best--bridal business drama. Bella and the gang are all here and readers will fall in love with the newest quirky characters straight from the creative mind of a fantastic storyteller.  (picture and description from amazon)
