The Perfect Christmas, book # 44

Another sweet little quick read.

What would make your Christmas perfect? For Cassie Beaumont, it's meeting her perfect match. Cassie, at thirty-three, wants a husband and kids, and so far, nothing's worked. Not blind dates, not the Internet and certainly not leaving love to chance. What's left? A professional matchmaker. He's Simon Dodson, and he's very choosy about the clients he takes on. Cassie finds Simon a difficult, acerbic know-it-all, and she's astonished when he accepts her as a client.  Claiming he has her perfect mate in mind, Simon assigns her three tasks to complete before she meets him. Three tasks that are all about Christmas: being a charity bell ringer, dressing up as Santa's elf at a children's party and preparing a traditional turkey dinner for her neighbors (whom she happens to dislike). Despite a number of comical mishaps, Cassie does it all—and she's finally ready to meet her match.  But just like the perfect Christmas gift, he turns out to be a wonderful surprise!  (picture and description from Amazon)

Wondering if I will squeeze in another Christmas book or not.  Tomorrow and Saturday I hope to finally rest from the craziness and finally watch as many Hallmark movies as possible!!

Happy Reading!

Dashing Through the Snow, book #43

Merry Christmas!  Today I had the *distinct* pleasure of reading this entire book ~ in one day!  My day started a little rough, a lingering migraine from yesterday (ugh!) but THANK THE GOOD LORD BABY JESUS it finally went away and I was able to enjoy the day with my sweet crazy family.  Since I have three teenagers they literally didn't wake up and come downstairs until after 10:00, so I had a lot of time this morning to myself.  [I was up at 5:30 with the migraine and couldn't go back to sleep ... ]  Among other things like emptying the dishwasher, setting the Christmas Breakfast Table, catching up on my Christmas Advent Scripture Writing I started on this book.  I had already read the first chapter in one of my other Debbie Macomber Christmas books so I was a little hooked.

Again, like reading a Hallmark movie [Surprise!  It is one!]  but loved it none the less.

Ashley Davison, a graduate student in California, desperately wants to spend the holidays with her family in Seattle. Dashiell Sutherland, a former army intelligence officer, has a job interview in Seattle and must arrive by December 23. Though frantic to book a last-minute flight out of San Francisco, both are out of luck: Every flight is full, and there’s only one rental car available. Ashley and Dash reluctantly decide to share the car, but neither anticipates the wild ride ahead.  At first they drive in silence, but forced into close quarters Ashley and Dash can’t help but open up. Not only do they find they have a lot in common, but there’s even a spark of romance in the air. Their feelings catch them off guard—never before has either been so excited about a first meeting. But the two are in for more twists and turns along the way as they rescue a lost puppy, run into petty thieves, and even get caught up in a case of mistaken identity. Though Ashley and Dash may never reach Seattle in time for Christmas, the season is still full of surprises—and their greatest wishes may yet come true. (picture and description at Amazon)

I have one more Christmas book up my sleeve before I head back for regular books ... can you guess the author?  :)

Merry Christmas!

Mrs. Miracle, book #42

Another Debbie Macomber book ... that I love!  And this one I started out loving right off the bat!

Seth Webster's heart never healed after he lost his adored wife.  Now, with Christmas approaching, wild twin boys to raise alone, a home in chaos, and the latest in a long line of exasperated housekeepers quitting in disgust, Seth needs more than help to keep his family together ... he needs a miracle!
And then a miracle arrives on his doorstep.  Her name is Mrs. Merkle, but the kids call her "Mrs. Miracle" --- and from the moment the warm, knowing, and very patient nanny appears, everything is different.  Her sassy spirit is infectious, and it gives Seth the courage to approach Reba, a beautiful travel agent who's been hurt and betrayed, and is afraid to ever love again.  Through the magic of faith --- and with a little help from a children's Christmas pageant and A LOT of encouragement from Mrs. Miracle --- Seth and Reba might just be able to find a Christmas miracle of their very own: true love.  (picture from Amazon, description from back of book)

Another [surprise!] happy ending!

The Christmas Angel Project, book #41

Wow but wow.  Again, I started this book and thought I wouldn't like it, but it also was utterly amazing!  The description doesn't accurately describe what it is about, so that threw me for a loop.

Basically, there was a book club of about 5 ladies who were all close to the leader Abby.  They all felt like she held them together.  Right after Thanksgiving Abby died in her sleep unexpectedly.  She had made Christmas Angel ornaments for all the girls in the Book Club and her husband delivered them before he left town to visit his brother while he was mourning.

Each of the angels looked exactly like each girl and Abby had hidden a Bible verse she picked out specifically for them and tucked it in the ornament.  The verse was precisely what each girl needed for their current situation.

Even though the are distraught, they decided that since Abby was such an angel to them, they should each go be an angel to someone else, or do something for someone else.  Each girl ended up getting an idea dropped in her lap and they all helped each other out to accomplish their goals.  They were all so excited and happy to do it they forgot about being sad about Abby passing away.

And so this book reminded me of the MOST AMAZING TRIP OF MY LIFE to Thailand for a mission event.  Long story short, it was for women who were missionaries or expats or anyone just needing some loving on.  We organized an incredible retreat with speakers, music, American food, fancy hotel, and workshops in fun stuff like makeup, crafting, journaling, I don't even remember all of them, but my dear friend Mendy and I did a session on scrapbooking.  We also accumulated a boatload of free goodies to give to the ladies.  To say they were overjoyed was an understatement. That trip was one of the highlights of my life, as I began to see how the passions and love God gave me could be used for His glory!  It really started something within me to want to give everything away, to be able to "be an angel" for someone.

Read this book.  Even if you don't like it at first, keep reading.  And go be an angel for someone this season.  Or this month.  Or next year.  YOUR life will also be changed.  That is a 100% guarantee.

Twelve Days of Christmas, book #40

So when I ran out of books on my Paperwhite to read, I decided ~ shock of all shocks ~ to go to the library for a hardback book.  😄  I quickly discovered more Debbie Macomber books and at first I was a little hesitant, but I just jumped in with this one and never put it down.  Yes, it's like reading a Hallmark Movie, but still fun and clean and silly and sweet all at the same time.

Friendly and bubbly, Julia Padden likes nearly everyone, but her standoffish neighbor, Cain Maddox, presents a particular challenge. No matter how hard she’s tried to be nice, Cain rudely rebuffs her at every turn, preferring to keep to himself. But when Julia catches Cain stealing her newspaper from the lobby of their apartment building, that’s the last straw. She’s going to break through Cain’s Scrooge-like exterior the only way she knows how: by killing him with kindness.  To track her progress, Julia starts a blog called The Twelve Days of Christmas. Her first attempts to humanize Cain are far from successful. Julia brings him homemade Christmas treats and the disagreeable grinch won’t even accept them. Meanwhile, Julie’s blog becomes an online sensation, as an astonishing number of people start following her adventures. Julia continues to find ways to express kindness and, little by little, chips away at Cain’s gruff façade to reveal the caring man underneath. Unbelievably, Julia feels herself falling for Cain—and she suspects that he may be falling for her as well. But as the popularity of her blog continues to grow, Julia must decide if telling Cain the truth about having chronicled their relationship to the rest of the world is worth risking their chance at love.  (description and picture at Amazon)

Interestingly enough, this cover doesn't quite make sense to me.  It is different than the library book I have ~ which I get ~ but this has two dogs on it and there was only one dog mentioned in the book.  Hhm .... unless maybe another artist was using the dogs to symbolize Julie and Cain?

Already started on another Christmas book.  Wasn't sure I would like it at first, but not too many pages in I was hooked again.

Happy Reading!

A Plain and Fancy Christmas, book #39

Wow.  Just wow.

It's been a while since I have read an amish book and my selection of Christmas books on my paperwhite was getting thin.  I decided surely I could read this and it might not be too bad.

So chapter one starts and talks about Rachel Yoder (aren't all amish girls named Rachel Yoder?  yawn.) and her little life situation.  She has a daughter named Katie Yoder.  (I was wrong.  Only half of the amish girls are named Rachel Yoder, the other half are named Katie Yoder.  double yawn.)

Then chapter two talks all about Ellie Lawrence in a big exciting job in big exciting NY and so I'm thinking, "Ok, this is going to be one of those where something happens and fancy Ellie has to go to Lancaster and learn how to do amish things ... blah blah ... "

Then chapter three starts and talks about an old nurse who married a doctor and the life they had, but on one fateful night everything changed, when THE DOCTOR SENT HOME THE WRONG BABY WITH THE WRONG PARENTS!!!  Now for some of you that may start another snoozefest, but I have to admit once that revelation broke through I was trapped in this book!  I could not put it down!  I won't give away how Ellie and Rachel - and their birth parents/raised them parents - reacted to this news, but I was enthralled from that point on.  I was sad to see it end and while the author has written other books, they are all stand alones.  So this is one where I get to decide how I want it all to end ....

Raised in a Pennsylvania Amish community, young mother Rachel Yoder has led a simple life within her close-knit family. Widowed three years ago, she has moved back in with her parents, attempting to raise her daughter, Katie, without further emotional upheaval. Meanwhile, four hours and a whole world away in New York City, Ellie Lawrence is laser-focused on a high-powered public relations career, with too little time for her family, her friends, or even her boyfriend. Then one fateful day, these two very different women receive shocking news of a mistake made three decades earlier and long kept hidden: Shortly after their births, the two were accidentally switched in the hospital. Shaken to the core by this momentous news, Rachel and Ellie are plunged into an exploration of who they are and where they really belong. While Ellie is eager to learn more about her Amish family and their life in the countryside, Rachel cannot help but feel jealous as she watches the only mother she has ever known bonding so easily with her natural daughter. But Rachel also knows that her own biological family is out there, and with Katie at her side she heads for Manhattan, where she establishes a connection with the raucous, spirited Lawrences. As Ellie and Rachel make their way through unfamiliar landscapes, they face life-altering challenges and grapple with a crucial question: Will their old conventions and desires give way to new customs and yearnings? With the Christmas holidays fast approaching, it takes the love of two families for Rachel and Ellie to discover their own paths to fulfillment and happiness. (picture and description from Amazon)

Highly recommend this one!  And check out An Amish Gift, written by the same author, here.

Falling Like Snowflakes, book #38

Sweet sweet story!  After reading the last book I was ready for a little meat, a little more, and this one filled the order!

Speeding north through rural Maine, Eden Martelli wonders how her life came to this—on the run with her mute five-year-old son dozing fitfully in the passenger seat. When a breakdown leaves them stranded in Summer Harbor, Eden has no choice but to stay put through Christmas . . . even though they have no place to lay their heads.  Beau Callahan is a habitual problem solver—for other people anyway. He left the sheriff’s department to take over his family’s Christmas tree farm, but he’s still haunted by the loss of his parents and struggling to handle his first Christmas alone. When Eden shows up looking for work just as Beau’s feisty aunt gets out of the hospital, Beau thinks he’s finally caught a break. Eden is competent and dedicated—if a little guarded—and a knockout to boot. But, as he soon finds out, she also comes with a boatload of secrets. Eden has been through too much to trust her heart to another man, but Beau is impossible to resist, and the feeling seems to be mutual. As Christmas Eve approaches, Eden’s past catches up to her. Beau will go to the ends of the earth to keep her safe. But who’s going to protect his heart from a woman who can’t seem to trust again? (picture and description from Amazon)

Earlier this year we read The Goodbye Bride, which is actually book #2 in this series.  I sure hope she writes more, there are more brothers we need stories about!!

Wonder what Christmas book is next?

Happy Reading!

Merry and Bright, book #36

Sweet little book, basically like reading a Hallmark movie!

Merry Knight is pretty busy these days. She’s taking care of her family, baking cookies, decorating for the holidays, and hoping to stay out of the crosshairs of her stressed and by-the-book boss at the consulting firm where she temps. Her own social life is the last thing she has in mind, much less a man. Without her knowledge, Merry’s well-meaning mom and brother create an online dating profile for her—minus her photo—and the matches start rolling in. Initially, Merry is incredulous, but she reluctantly decides to give it a whirl. Soon Merry finds herself chatting with a charming stranger, a man with similar interests and an unmistakably kind soul. Their online exchanges become the brightest part of her day. But meeting face-to-face is altogether different, and her special friend is the last person Merry expects—or desires. Still, sometimes hearts can see what our eyes cannot. In this satisfying seasonal tale, unanticipated love is only a click away. (picture and description from Amazon)

I think I may read our Book Club choice next so I don't get late again this time!

A Christmas Visitor, book #35

Finally finished our Book Club book for the month.  Unfortunately it was after Book Club, but only one person had finished the book before our meeting.  But really, we only spend a fraction of the time on the book anyway.  :)

In this novel in Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer’s holiday series, the residents of Cape Light discover joy in the most unexpected packages this Christmas…
Molly knows she’s fortunate, but after raising children who are near adulthood, she is pregnant again. With her own life just taking off she can’t conceal her disappointment—and will have to explore what she truly needs to be happy to recapture her Christmas spirit. Meanwhile, Miranda has found an unconscious man in her orchard, and while she nurses him back to health, an unexpected attraction develops. Can she let uncertainty back in her life again? And Reverend Ben finds his own mystery, an abandoned wooden angel statue that people believe holds miraculous powers. He’d wished for more visitors, but his church turning into a tourist attraction is more a burden than a blessing. Christmas doesn’t always bring the things we ask for or expect. But sometimes it brings gifts more wonderful than we dreamed... (picture and description from Amazon)

Good news and bad news about this book:
1.  I really, really liked this book A LOT!!!  The story lines, the characters, the everything.
2. It is a series that has 17 books in it (most well over 200 pages each) and this is book 8.  As much as I would LOVE to read all of them, well, I'm not sure I can invest that much time, when there are over 200 other books calling to me also on my Paperwhite.  I could do an "off and on" read, like I did with the with Debbie Macomber books, but I'll have to think about that.  Hhm ...

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my faithful readers (ha!)!

Frosting and Flurries: Five Delicious Christmas Romances, books 30-34

These were cute little stories, set in different places, but lets face it ~ they had the same plot.  Girl and boy meet, girl doesn't like boy but boy likes girl, he tries to win her, he's almost there as girl starts to soften, a bad thing happens, they might break up, but in the end they get married.

THE SWEETNESS OF HER LOVE—KIMBERLY RAE JORDAN
James Dawson may have looked like the hero of one of the romances Erin Kirkland loves to read, but she quickly discovers that he is not the hero for her. After all, how can she have a happily-ever-after with a man who doesn’t believe in love or marriage? Who would have thought that a visit to his grandmother’s favorite bakery to order a cake for her ninetieth birthday would end up causing James to re-evaluate his whole life? Certainly not James Dawson. But following their rather disastrous first meeting, James is determined to show Erin that he is a better man than she’s first judged him to be.
Erin doesn’t want to friend-zone James, but she’s not sure she can trust that the changes he’s making will be permanent. Can someone really go from totally dismissing love and marriage to embracing it so quickly?

SUGAR AND SPICE—CECELIA DOWDY
Sheila Parks is stunned when Mason Smith, the identical twin brother of her ex-boyfriend Reese, moves to Blue Spring and opens a bakery. Reese’s cruel breakup still bothers her and seeing somebody who looks just like him is a painful reminder of her predicament. Unemployed, Sheila needs financial help and it appears that Mason can assist her with her problem. Can she learn to trust a man who looks just like her ex? Mason is stunned when Sheila storms into his bakery, mistakenly thinking that he’s Reese. Mason is used to comforting his womanizing brother’s ex-girlfriends. A stutterer, Mason has always had a hard time socializing with others. However, he finds himself smitten with beautiful Sheila. Can he control his stutter so that he can ask Sheila to be his date to his grandmother’s Christmas birthday party?  Both Sheila and Mason deal with past pains as they work together during the Christmas season.

MOOSTLETOE —JAN ELDER
Rev. Samantha Evans lands in Moose Creek, Maine, where parishioners chew up new ministers for breakfast. Happily, she also reunites with forest ranger Eric Palmer, her best friend from her teenage years. With Samantha’s career on the line, Eric must save her job and rescue his own shattered heart in the process. But how does Matilda the moose factor into the mix?

THE HECTOR CLAUSE—CLARE REVELL
The last thing Brie Dalgleish expected her boss to do was ask her to play an elf in the toy store grotto. She's even less enthusiastic when she discovers Santa is the same bloke who drove his car through a puddle the previous evening, completely soaking her. Hector Clause is playing Santa in the family owned toy store under sufferance as a favor to his grandfather. He'd rather be in a nice safe office, using his law degree, than playing Santa in a shop full of squealing kids. Even if the chief elf is on the cute side. With the store's centenary fast approaching, the anniversary party is abruptly cancelled. Hector resolves to celebrate anyway, but isn't prepared for the curveball he finds headed his way.

GINGER & BRAD’S HOUSE—MARION UECKERMANN
When Brad O’Sullivan is unfaithful to Ginger Murphy, she escapes to Australia for five long years. During this time, Brad’s shotgun marriage fails. Besides his little boy, Jamie, one other thing in his life has turned out sweet and successful—his pastry business. Ginger returns to Ireland, when her mother’s diagnosed with heart failure. She loves being a wedding flautist but fears bumping into the wedding cake chef she tries to avoid. (picture and descriptions from GoodReads)

I was already committed to reading these before I went to Book Club last month but they took longer than I thought!  Now I only have a few days to read that one!

Happy Reading!

The Secret to Hummingbird Cake, book #29

So this was interesting read.  It didn't take me too long before I realized this was not a Christian Fiction book.  Not that I am a complete snob, but when that is what you are used to reading and then you read a book that isn't, it takes me by surprise.  Reading books like this, and watching the TV shows I do, are a reminder to me that not everyone lives like I do.  Having the privilege of knowing Jesus makes me wonder how people in this world can live without Him.

In the South you always say “yes, ma’am” and “no, ma’am.” You know everybody’s business. Football is a lifestyle not a pastime. Food—especially dessert— is almost a religious experience. And you protect your friends as fiercely as you protect your family— even if the threat is something you cannot see.  In this spot-on Southern novel brimming with wit and authenticity, you’ll laugh alongside lifelong friends, navigate the sometimes rocky path of marriage, and roll through the outrageous curveballs that life sometimes throws . . . from devastating pain to absolute joy. And if you’re lucky, you just may discover the secret to hummingbird cake along the way. (picture and description from Amazon)

This book was about Carri, Ellie Rae and Laine; three best friends from childhood.  There are funny parts too it, but it is a whole lot more sad and I really didn't care for it as much as I thought it did.

But, like I said, it's time for Christmas books!

The Saturday Night Supper Club, book #28

Love Love Love this fun book we read for Book Club.  Makes me want to start a Supper Club, just for fun!

Denver chef Rachel Bishop has accomplished everything she’s dreamed and some things she never dared hope, like winning a James Beard Award and heading up her own fine-dining restaurant. But when a targeted smear campaign causes her to be pushed out of the business by her partners, she vows to do whatever it takes to get her life back . . . even if that means joining forces with the man who inadvertently set the disaster in motion. Essayist Alex Kanin never imagined his pointed editorial would go viral. Ironically, his attempt to highlight the pitfalls of online criticism has the opposite effect: it revives his own flagging career by destroying that of a perfect stranger. Plagued by guilt-fueled writer’s block, Alex vows to do whatever he can to repair the damage. He just doesn’t expect his interest in the beautiful chef to turn personal. Alex agrees to help rebuild Rachel’s tarnished image by offering his connections and his home to host an exclusive pop-up dinner party targeted to Denver’s most influential citizens: the Saturday Night Supper Club. As they work together to make the project a success, Rachel begins to realize Alex is not the unfeeling opportunist she once thought he was, and that perhaps there’s life―and love―outside the pressure-cooker of her chosen career. But can she give up her lifelong goals without losing her identity as well? (picture and description from Amazon)

Next up in Book Club?  It's November, time for Christmas books!

Beyond the Waves, book #27

I just have one word: snoozefest. Again.  Feel free to pass this one up ...

Can a Love Shattered by the Sands of Time...Rise Beyond the Waves?
Taysia Green nearly chokes on her water when Officer Kylen Sumner shows up in her office claiming he’s back in town because he loves her. Since he’s broken her heart more than once, and she recently started dating youth pastor Blaine Pittman, she wants absolutely nothing to do with Kylen. But he’s been asked to stand in as the mediator between Taysia and wannabe model Sophia Clinesmith, who twisted her ankle in the parking lot of Taysia’s business and is threatening a lawsuit.  If she didn’t need him to help save her gym, Taysia would tell Kylen to take a long midnight walk on a short cliffside trail.  She’s perfectly happy with her life just the way it is. So why is it that just the sight of Kylen Sumner sets her traitorous heart to dancing faster than it did the time Blaine kissed her?
(picture and description from Amazon)

Just keep moving .... the next one I read will be one for Book Club next week because I just realized it is next Tuesday!!

Laugh It Up, book #26

Sorry, not much laughing in this book.  I have heard several interviews with her - and of course seen the video - but this book did not deliver what I hoped it would.  I think I was expecting more of an autobiography and this had pieces of her story but mostly it was a "Go be Happy" book ...

The world knows Candace Payne as “Chewbacca Mom,” the wife and mother of two from Dallas who captured the hearts of nearly 200 million people around the world with nothing but a toy Chewbacca mask, a smart phone, and infectious laughter.  Candace’s viral moment of simple joy became Facebook Live’s top video. But what the video doesn’t show is Candace’s storied journey of daunting obstacles on the way to the joy-filled life—extreme poverty, past trauma, and struggles with self-worth.  Laugh It Up! tells the rest of the story behind the woman in the mask. Like most of us, Candace has often felt overlooked, undervalued, and insignificant. But she has also discovered the secrets to unshakable joy that no circumstance can take away, and Laugh It Up! will help you discover and experience the same. Join Candace to discover the gift God has given us all to experience life to the fullest. All you need to do is answer “yes” when joy, whom Candace personifies as a friend, calls you to come and play.
·         Do you feel tempted to give up on your dreams? Joy stays the course.
·         Do your knees knock when thinking about the future? Joy hopes for what can be.
·         Do you feel unseen and unnoticed? Joy is content whether backstage or center stage.

·         Do you feel crushed under the weight of regret? Joy loves you enough to weep with you, but also enough to help you move on.

When life punches you in the gut, it can be difficult to muster a smile—much less a laugh. But with humor and power, wit and wisdom, Candace lights the way forward to a life that is free indeed. (picture and description from Amazon)

Nothing to see here ... moving on ....

With Every Letter, book #25

For my friends who like to write letters, this could be your new favorite book.  I'm pretty sure it is on my list now too!

Lt. Mellie Blake is a nurse serving in the 802nd Medical Squadron, Air Evacuation, Transport. As part of a morale building program, she reluctantly enters into an anonymous correspondence with Lt. Tom MacGilliver, an officer in the 908th Engineer Aviation Battalion in North Africa. As their letters crisscross the Atlantic, Tom and Mellie develop a unique friendship despite not knowing the other's true identity. When both are transferred to Algeria, the two are poised to meet face to face for the first time. Will they overcome their fears and reveal who they are, or will their future be held hostage to their past? And can they learn to trust God and embrace the gift of love he offers them?  (picture and description from Amazon)

I wonder if I will ever be able to read 100 books in a year again ...

A (Nearly) Normal Nanny, book #24

If you will remember, I few years ago I read this book.  It told the story of Sadie Jenkins, who owned a Christmas shop in Gatlinburg, and Nate Myers, a big fancy businessman with a big bank account.  I won't give a spoiler, but ...

This book I just read is the story of Mari, who is Sadie's daughter from a bad decision in her teens.  However, in God's redemptive story it all turned out good.  Another fun, quick, easy read from my friend Krista!

Normal is highly overrated... …Unless you’re Mari Jenkins. Her life growing up was anything but normal, and she’s making up for that as an adult. She has a new job as a nanny of twin girls, a weekly schedule, and a detailed ten-year plan, and nothing will get in the way of her meeting every one of her goals. Especially not a man, who isn’t allowed to appear in her life until around year eight or so on the plan. Until that is, the twin’s uncle, Brandon Stone, shows up and douses her life with a whirlwind of crazy. Not only is he a lover of all things spontaneous, he is also the drummer for the award-winning Country music artist she’s had a fangirl crush on for years. Suddenly, normal doesn’t look quite so enticing. (picture and description from Amazon)

Lisa Wingate Carolina Chronicles, books #21-23

Lisa Wingate in some ways is a pretty great storyteller.  But in other ways her attention to detail is over the top.  While muddling through The Prayer Box I was about to give up on her, but then the story really pulled me in so I decided I would overlook her superfluous ways and just focus on the story at hand.

This series walks us from the beginning of meeting the people at Sandy's Seashell Shop and gently winds around to some of the people affected by sweet and crazy Sandy.  Besides the fact they live at the beach, I am more than a little jealous of the group of ladies in the Seashell Club.

The Sea Glass Sisters: Prelude to The Prayer Box
Elizabeth Gallagher has been balancing on the ragged edge for a while now. Then a rough case on the boards of her 911 operator’s job collides with a family conflict at home, and Elizabeth finds herself finally coming apart at the seams. A four-state road trip—trapped in a car with her mother—is the last thing she needs. Their destination may be beautiful Hatteras Island, but the reason for going is anything by pleasant. After one disastrous hurricane, and with a second one working its way up the coast, it’s time to convince Aunt Sandy to abandon her little seaside store on North Carolina’s Outer Banks and return to the family fold in Michigan. But when the storm sweeps through, the three women will discover that sisterhood and the sea can change hearts, lives, and futures . . . often in the most unpredictable of ways. (picture and description at amazon)

The Prayer Box

When Iola Anne Poole, an old-timer on Hatteras Island, passes away in her bed at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage, Tandi Jo Reese, finds herself charged with the task of cleaning out Iola's rambling Victorian house.  Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola's walls, but everything changes with the discovery of eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year, spanning from Iola's youth to her last days. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a lifetime, written on random bits of paper--the hopes and wishes, fears and thoughts of an unassuming but complex woman passing through the seasons of an extraordinary, unsung life filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything. (picture and description at amazon)

The Tidewater Sisters: Postlude to The Prayer Box

Tandi Reese and her sister, Gina, have always been bound by complicated ties. Amid the rubble of a difficult childhood lie memories of huddling beneath beds and behind sofas while parental wars raged. Sisterhood was safety . . . once. But now? Faced with legal papers for a fraud she didn't commit, Tandi suspects that her sister has done something unthinkable. With Tandi's wedding just around the corner, a trip to the North Carolina Tidewater for a reckoning with Gina was not part of the plan. Redeeming Grace, book #20

Wow but wow.  I am usually hesitant about reading fictionalized versions of Bible stories because I am just not sure how far the author will take "poetic liberties" but this one was amazing.  It seems as though I have read others by her, however a quick search from my older blog posts show it was actually other authors here, here, and one I love here.

What I loved about this book is that it ties right in with a Bible Study some of my book club buddies and I are doing.  We are working through Ruth: Loss, Love and Legacy by Kelly Minter.  The Bible study was supposed to last through the summer, but with all our crazy schedules we are still plodding through it.  The study has been amazing eye opener to all the details and connections to the New Testament that -- even having read it 100 times and heard the story since preschool -- I have never really seen.  Needless to say, I highly recommend both!

When famine visits Bethlehem, Boaz holds out hope for rain while his relative Elimelech moves his wife Naomi and their sons to Moab. For a while, it appears the Lord is blessing Elimelech's family, and his sons marry two lovely Moabite women. But calamities strike, one after another, leaving Naomi alone in a foreign land with only her childless daughters-in-law for comfort. When news reaches Naomi that the famine in Bethlehem has lifted, only Ruth will hazard the journey to her mother-in-law's homeland. Destitute and downhearted, Naomi resigns herself to a life of bitter poverty, but Ruth holds out hope for a better future. And Boaz may be the one God has chosen to provide it.  (picture and description at amazon.)

Happy Reading!  Wonder if I should pick up something else or wait and see what Terezia picks on Thursday ....

The Writing Desk, book #19

It has been a while since I have read a Rachel Hauck book, and I decided it was time.  This decision came to me this summer when I found this book on sale.  It sat on my infamous bedside table for a good while, then about two weeks ago I picked it up.  Once I got started I couldn't stop.  Needless to say, it comes highly recommended!!

Tenley Roth’s first book was a runaway bestseller. Now that her second book is due, she’s locked in fear. Can she repeat her earlier success or is she a fraud who has run out of inspiration?  With pressure mounting from her publisher, Tenley is weighted with writer’s block. But when her estranged mother calls asking Tenley to help her through chemotherapy, she packs up for Florida where she meets handsome furniture designer Jonas Sullivan and discovers the story her heart’s been missing.  A century earlier, another woman wrote at the same desk with hopes and fears of her own. Born during the Gilded Age, Birdie Shehorn is the daughter of the old money Knickerbockers. Under the strict control of her mother, her every move is decided ahead of time, even whom she’ll marry. But Birdie has dreams she doesn’t know how to realize. She wants to tell stories, write novels, make an impact on the world. When she discovers her mother has taken extreme measures to manipulate her future, she must choose between submission and security or forging a brand new way all on her own.  Tenley and Birdie are from two very different worlds, but fate has bound them together in a way time cannot erase.  (picture and description at amazon)

First I am going to work on some Bible Study my book club chicks and I have been trying to do, then it is on to what I understand is an exciting book about Ruth.

Secrets Come Home, book #18

Ok, so this cover looked a little scary so I'm glad I was reading this on my Paperwhite!!  We read this for Book Club this month and it was a quick read.  There is a series of these, but I'm not sure I'm going to read any more as I didn't really connect with any of the characters that much.  The author, Samantha Price, is quite prolific having written over 120 books!

After Ettie Smith's friend, Agatha, dies, Ettie is surprised to find that Agatha has left her a house. During building repairs, the body of an Amish man who disappeared forty years earlier is discovered under the floorboards.  When it comes to light that Agatha and the deceased man were once engaged to marry, the police declare Agatha as the murderer.  Ettie sets out to prove otherwise.  Soon Ettie hears rumors of stolen diamonds, rival criminal gangs, and a supposed witness to the true murderer's confession. When Ettie discovers a key, she is certain it holds the answers she is looking for. Will the detective listen to Ettie's theories when he sees that the key belongs to a safe deposit box?  (picture and description from amazon)

I wonder what is up next ???

Eat Cake, Be Brave, book #17

Yay!  Yay!  Yay!  I got my book from the altogether awesome Melissa Radke!  I knew Melissa from when she was here through church.  Well, let me rephrase that.  I *thought* I knew Melissa Radke.  The persona she appeared to be - which she openly admits now - as a carefree, fun loving, crazy chick was actually all an act to coverup the heartache and pain she was going through.  Now, she still appears to be pretty fun, and when I saw the video about the book and read what it was going to be about, I was all in.

I have several pages that are already dogeared (it's mine and it's signed so I can do what I want with it!) that really, really spoke to me.  I wont quote all of them because you really need to read several pages to understand what is being said, but this first one nailed it on the head ~

"You are who you are.  Right now.  Like it or hate it, this is you." [pg. 19]

That just started the ball rolling in my head about how I need to love myself ... all xx pounds of myself.  All bad habits of myself.  And all the good of myself too.  There are things I can do - I *should* do - I hope to do - to make me better, but I need to love myself as I am RIGHT NOW.

My name is Melissa Radke, and there is a very real chance you have no idea who I am or why I wrote a book. But admit it, you're curious! Even though millions of people seem to like watching my videos bemoaning the trials of parenting, marriage, French braiding, faith, and living life as an anti-aging female, you may still be wondering who let me write a book. I mean, books are written by people who have been interviewed by Gayle King and say things like, "You see, Gayle, I was having a root canal and I literally died in the chair. I saw heaven. Also, when I came back to earth I could speak Mandarin."  Yeah, that didn't happen to me. No Mandarin. Though I have been known to break out in song! (My voice was once described as a "ray of light in a dark world" . . . but I think my dad was being a little dramatic.) Although if Gayle King were to ever ask me I would tell her: "I wrote this book between taking my kids to the local pool and picking out flip-flops at Old Navy, and the only metaphysical moment I experienced came right after I looked directly into one of those mirrors with 10x magnification."  I wrote this book because when I turned 41 I made a decision to be brave. To live brave - bolder and freer. You see, I thought our lives were supposed to change when we turned 40...but mine didn't. Yet every piece of it changed when I turned 41; when I set out to prove that it wasn't too late for me, that careless words wouldn't stunt me and rejection would not stop me. And maybe, just maybe, it will take you reading about the journey I took to finding my sense of self-worth in order for you to rightfully believe in yours. This book is about how all the years of my life led up to the one that changed it. So, cut a big slice and raise a fork...

Here's to bravery.
Here's to courage.
Here's to cake.
(And not the [yucky] kind, like carrot.)

Lucky me also got to go to a book signing at Parnassus Books where I had my book signed, chatted a little with her (she remembered me!) and had my picture made!

In conclusion, go buy this book at Target online (If she sells xx amount online they will put it in the store and you know how many people shop at Target!).

Watch her hilarious and touching videos. (Especially the one about Red Ribbon week that started it all ... )
Follow her on Facebook and Instagram.
Listen to her podcasts, but only if you have 45 mins to laugh your head off. Or cry.  Happy tears or sad tears.

Finally, this fall or winter her crazy family will be on a reality show on USA!!!

Have I made myself clear?  :)
