Widow of Gettysburg, book #6

This was another book sitting by my bed that needed to be read.  The story itself was somewhat familiar -- Civil War battle comes to town, house with husband/dad gone turned to hospital for soldiers of "enemy" and women are required to become nurses.  The thing that made this one different was that it took place in the North.  Now, the whole Civil War thing is a little tricky for me, as my blood is very southern, but I also can't imagine anyone in my family being ok with slaves.  So most of the books I read about the Civil War typically do take place in the South.  It took some getting used to for the "enemy" to be the South, but it did remind me that there was heartbreak, death, and and just plain horribleness on both sides.

When a horrific battle rips through Gettysburg, the farm of Union widow Liberty Holloway is disfigured into a Confederate field hospital, bringing her face to face with unspeakable suffering--and a Rebel scout who awakens her long dormant heart.  While Liberty's future crumbles as her home is destroyed, the past comes rushing back to Bella, a former slave and Liberty's hired help, when she finds herself surrounded by Southern soldiers, one of whom knows the secret that would place Liberty in danger if revealed.  In the wake of shattered homes and bodies, Liberty and Bella struggle to pick up the pieces the battle has left behind. Will Liberty be defined by the tragedy in her life, or will she find a way to triumph over it?Widow of Gettysburg is inspired by first-person accounts from women who lived in Gettysburg during the battle and its aftermath.  (picture and description at Amazon)

Not sure what is next up, but I'm feeling it is time for another non-fiction book.

What are you reading?

Into the Fire, book #5

I was a little nervous at first reading this, since I hadn't read anything this intense in a while, but once I was sucked in there was no turning back.  Irene Hannon always continues to amaze me with her diversity in writing, from drama driven books like this one to sweet love stories like our Hope Harbor books.

As a former smokejumper, arson investigator Bri Tucker knows her way around fires. But after a mysterious blaze takes the life of a former colleague, Bri inherits a curious puzzle from him that raises questions about several fiery deaths. Someone, however, doesn't want her picking up where he left off in search of answers.  When she teams up with ATF Special Agent Marc Davis to solve the puzzle, the case heats up--as does the attraction between them. Sparks fly as the danger escalates, but will they manage to track down the person behind the mysterious deaths before their budding romance--and maybe even their lives--go up in flames?  (description at Amazon)

Starting a new book on my bedside table that has been there for over a year!  Not ready for another non-fiction yet, but this should be a fast read and we'll see what happens then!
