Little Fires Everywhere, Book #12

So this was interesting.  I had seen the ads for the show and had our home girl Reese Witherspoon in it.  It looked interesting but I didn't think much else about it.  When we were in Huntsville the other week I saw Rebecca had this book and she told me I should take it and read it.  Her last recommendation to me, Just Mercy, ended up being good so I decided to read this too.

It took me a while to get into it, but in the end I loved it - for a non-Christian book.  Sorry not sorry if that offends, but I just prefer to not read books with lots of language and sex in them.  All the characters had troubles, but I think Izzy's trouble is the one that broke my heart the most.  Not to give too much away, but about 1/3 of the way through the author tells a back story about when Izzy was born and if Elena had explained to her why she seemed to "be on her" more than the others it might have made her not be so rebellious.

I do love the way the author would be in the present and very easily ~ before you even realize it ~ slip into the past, or into another scene that was playing out simultaneously, then bring you right back where she started.  It made the story all the more rich, without feeling like you never knew which "time" or "place" you were in.

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned—from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren—an enigmatic artist and single mother—who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town—and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides.  Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.  Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood—and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.  (picture and description from Amazon)
