2022 ~ The Final Tally

The question of the year to be answered, and I know you all are waiting with baited breath, is whether or not I completed my personal challenge of reading 55 books this year.  Well, yes and no.  But we'll take the bigger yes!

On my last post, I was only up to 47 books, but the final books came in by reading more books in the Bible.  I finished strong with Leviticus, Ecclesiastes, Matthew, Acts, Romans, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, 2 Corinthians.  Which puts me almost half way done with that reading plan.  I am DETERMINED to get through it this round, since I have only been working on it since 2018.

The thing that I am disappointed with myself about my reading goals this year was that I did not read as many non fiction books as I wanted to.  I read three biographies here, here, and here, and two regular non-fiction books here and here.  I mean, I guess you could qualify the books of the Bible as non-fiction (and biography) but I consider them in a category all their own. :)

The final total:

11,546 pages!!!

I think I'll go for 56 next year, and decide how to add more biographies and other non-fictions books.

Let me know what your reading goals are for next year!

Always reading ...

The Christmas Swap, book #47

Funny story about this one .... as you know I have now read a few non-Christian books and not been overly happy, but went with the cute story.  So I started what I thought was this one and in chapter it had all the things I despise about non-Christian books!  I was so disappointed and shocked and angry as we have read so  many of Melody Carlson's books before and she never had any of that in hers.  I was on the middle of going off about it to my DH when I went to look up and see if this was a new book this year, like maybe she was trying to "cross over" ... when I realized I was reading the wrong book!   Needless to say I was relieved Melody had not crossed over, but I was still irritated I had paid money for a book I didn't want to read.  Alas ...

Once I got into this one, it was everything and more that I expected in a sweet Melody Carlson book!  A nice ending to the 2022 Christmas book reading.

All Emma Daley wants this holiday season is a white Christmas. But the young teacher and struggling musician sure can't find that in sunny Arizona. Luckily, there's someone living in a perfect mountain home in the Colorado Rockies looking to make a vacation trade this year. West Prescott is an in-demand songwriter and talented musician who put his own singing career on hold to write songs for celebrity acts to perform. When his mother convinces him to do a vacation trade for Christmas, he never imagined one of the houseguests would be so sweet--or so strikingly pretty. Naturally, he decides to stick around, and, to get better acquainted, he poses as the house's caretaker. But when Emma's friend Gillian discovers his true identity and sets her sights on him, things get . . . messy. (Picture and description at Amazon)

My next post will sum finish out 2022 ~ stay tuned to see if I met my goal!

Home, Hearth and the Holidays, book #46

So this book I actually read back in November but somehow I missed getting it up here.  I read the first book in the series back in 2014 and never got around the second one.  I picked this one up as a Christmas book and quickly filled in the holes.  I am now excited to move onto the final book, but i just finished this book at the beginning of Christmas book reading season, so I think it may be my first book for 2023!

With holidays approaching in the charming town of Appleton, and Daphne Ballinger's deadline to "get hitched" drawing closer, Daphne finds herself happily distracted with the unexpected tasks of "motherhood." Young Mabel is enjoying the attention, but the clock is ticking and unless love comes her way, Daphne's delightful life will start unraveling by spring. (picture and description at Amazon)

A Gift to Remember, book #45

We decided to go to New York City for Christmas this year and Rebecca thought it would be a great idea if we all read the same NYC Christmas-y book.  Of course we couldn't all decide on one, but Leah and I did read this one.  Again, not Christian, but a cute story nonetheless.  It read like a Hallmark Movie, and alas, it is!

Darcy Archer works in a small bookstore in Manhattan. A daydream believer, she refuses to settle for anything less than being swept off her feet by the perfect man... literally.  One day, when cycling to work, Darcy accidentally crashes into a sharply dressed gentleman walking his dog. He is knocked out cold, rushed to hospital and the poor pup gets left behind. Wracked with guilt, Darcy takes the dog and makes plans to reunite him with his owner, Aidan. As she discovers the mysterious stranger's world of books, travel, adventure and all the wonderful things she's ever dreamed about, Darcy builds a picture of this man and wonders if he could be THE ONE...  But does fantasy match reality? What happens when Prince Charming wakes up? Will Aidan be the happy ever after she's always imagined?  (picture and description from Amazon)

Later this week I will also update on all the books of the Bible I have read, and we will see if I got to my 55 books or not ... along with a total page count!

Me outside the NYPL!

Happy Reading!

Melissa

Edited to add:

We all thought this sounded like a Hallmark movie, so I looked it up and indeed it was!  We decided to watch it this week and oh my word but they hacked it up so bad you could hardly even tell it was the same story!!

The Christmas Bookshop, book #44

Not a Christian book, sadly, but the story was cute.  (The cover and title was cute not to pass up) I guess reading a non-Christian book every once in a while gets my out of my Christian ghetto, but I'll be ready to get back in it.

Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life does not appeal.  Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.  Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie’s ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop—and Carmen? And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured family?  (picture and description at Amazon)

So sometimes I get asked, why only Christian fiction?  There are so many authors out there who write good stuff, when the book isn't labeled "Christian" or there are so many "feel good" books out there that may not have God and Jesus in them, but they aren't inherently bad.  And I mean, Melissa, do we need to talk about the TV shows you watch?  Are they "Christian"? (ouch)

Here's my answer:
Yes, I agree with the above.  Yes, the TV shows I watch are probably no worse than "non-Christian" books.  However, I'm typically not quite as invested in the TV shows as I am books. (Well, let's not talk about Grey's Anatomy, but that's another story!)  Books have so much more in them than a 45 minute show.   With books, you FEEL them, you can SMELL where they are (campfire, bookstore, country, smoke, warm kitchen, etc), you can literally put yourself in the story as a bystander, things you just can't do in a TV show.

And when I'm reading books, I SEE the words.  I'm not so keen on seeing curse words in black and white.  I don't like getting in the heads of some of the characters in non-Christian books.  I don't like reading about characters having one night hookups, or getting insanely drunk, etc.

I'm not judging anyone who doesn't read mainly Christian books like me, but for the same reason I chose to listen only to praise & worship music. I follow the GIGO philosophy.  (garbage in garbage out)

Just don't talk to me about my TV #eyeroll.

Wreathed in Disgrace, book #43

An odd one Marsha picked for us for Book Club, but once I was sucked in I loved it!

A famous actress, a protective bodyguard, a festive Christmas season, and a killer...or two...on the loose.  Everybody believes movie star Denise Masters abandoned her family to pursue her dream, but the truth is much more complex. For years, she's longed to return to Coventry to repair her relationship with her daughter, but contractual obligations--and fear of being rejected--have kept her away. When a serial killer targets Hollywood actors, Denise decides to spend the Christmas holidays in New Hampshire. She will finally face the disgrace of her past.  Private security agent Jon Donley figures the woman he's been hired to guard will turn out to be a paranoid, privileged prima donna. Instead, the more he gets to know Denise, the more he likes her. But he’s not being paid to get involved with her. His job is to keep her safe while he figures out what links her to the other victims.  But the serial killer on the west coast isn't the only danger they face. A second one is closing in fast, threatening not just Denise but the little girl she'll stop at nothing to protect.  (picture and description of Amazon)

Now on to decide my next fun Christmas book!

An Ivy Hill Christmas and 1 Corinthians, books #41-42

A sweet little book that plays out in England.  I liked it well enough, although I feel like the Epilogue should have been the last chapter, not an Epilogue.

Richard Brockwell, the younger son of Ivy Hill's most prominent family, hasn't been home for Christmas in years. He prefers to live in the London townhouse, far away from Brockwell Court, the old family secret that haunts him, and the shadows of his past mistakes. But then his mother threatens to stop funding his carefree life--unless he comes home for Christmas. Out of options, he sets out for Ivy Hill, planning to be back on a coach bound for London and his unencumbered bachelor life as soon as the festivities are over. But Christmas in the country presents unforeseen surprises, including encounters with an orphaned apprentice, the first love he disappointed years ago, and Arabella Awdry, a young lady who is far more appealing than he recalled . . . and determined to have nothing to do with him. Will Christmastime in Ivy Hill, with its village charm, kissing boughs, joyous songs, and divine hope, work its magic in his heart . . . and hers as well? (picture and book from Amazon)

In my journey through the Bible, I also finished 1 Corinthians. (see this post)

All I Want for Christmas, book #40

This book started weird, then sort of came together, then finally I was up reading at 4:30 AM trying to see how it would end.  I'm not sure I'd give it 5 stars, though, maybe 3, simply because it seemed like several authors worked on it and no one read the manuscript all the way through before publishing.

James sells toys. He's a workaholic and he's made a very good living, even if his wife and four children don't appreciate it. Truth is, his marriage is falling apart and he barely recognizes his kids.  So when James's youngest daughter, 7-year-old Reba, asks God for a Christmas miracle to "fix" her family, something most unexpected happens—unexpected and horrible. The Christmas tree catches fire and the house burns down, taking with it all of their possessions.  One bad thing leads to another as rock bottom gives way to new lows and the family is sent spiraling down a dark and unfamiliar path. Reba wonders if God decided to give her the very opposite of what she prayed for.  Finally, separated and destitute, James and the family are left with absolutely nothing—nothing but a brand-new understanding of what's actually important in life.  Now James must rekindle his faith, learn what's truly important to him, and find a way to win his family back. If he can pull it off, there may just be that Christmas miracle waiting for him.  (picture and description from Amazon)

Distortion, book #39

Robi picked this for us and it was another Terri Blackstock thriller for sure.  This is book 2 in a series, and after our last TB series I wasn't sure if we could just jump into book 2.  There were several things that would have made more sense if I had of read book 1 first, but it wasn't like I was completely lost.

When Juliet Cole’s husband of fifteen years is murdered before her eyes, she thinks it was a random shooting. Devastated and traumatized, she answers hours of questioning, then returns home to break the tragic news to her sons. But a threatening voicemail escalates this from a random shooting to a planned, deliberate attack.  Juliet realizes that she and her children are in danger too—unless she meets the killers’ demands. But as she and her sisters untangle the clues, her husband’s dark secrets come to light. The more she learns, the more her life is dismantled. Was her husband an innocent victim or a hardened criminal?  (picture and description from Amazon)

It's finally time for Christmas books!

For Such a Time As This: My Faith Journey through the White House and Beyond, book #37

So I was looking for another biography to read and found this one on my list.  Man, it blew my socks off!  I remember watching her on TV when she was the press secretary during those "unprecendented" times and being impressed. But reading and finding out about all the "behind the scenes" stuff blew my mind.  Her big soap box was the fact that the main stream media never gave Trump a fair shake and she was doing all she could to get the TRUTH out about all the lies they were telling about him.  It really reminded me about how we can no longer believe anything MSM tells us, because it is only what they want you to know ~ which is not necessarily the truth.

If you would have told me that in the year 2020 I would stand at the White House podium and communicate with the American people as COVID-19 ravaged the globe and violent protests beset the nation, I would have told you that you were crazy. But Jesus Christ had this very plan for my life.  From White House intern to White House press secretary, from production assistant to national television host, from Catholic all-girls high school to Harvard Law School, God has guided my path through uncharted territory. In For Such a Time as This, I will chronicle my journey to the White House and offer never-before-told anecdotes about what really happened within the Trump administration. You will experience some of the most high stakes moments in the West Wing right alongside me as I reveal how faith got me through. (picture and description from Amazon)

November usually  means its time to start reading Christmas books, but others have caught my eye so I'm not sure what to do!

Hearts Stolen, book #36

I really liked this book until the last 3 pages.  I had a dream the night before I finished it that one character would not get resolution in book and sure enough she did not!!!  :(  Then I realized it was a series, but not even in the next book does it talk about the girl in question!  Katie says that means I get to decide how it ends, but I don't like books like that -- or movies!!

Unbeknownst to loved ones, a headstrong young wife is snatched off the prairie by two Comanche braves, carried north of the Red River, and traded to their war chief for ponies. After five years, a small detail of Texas Rangers rides into camp, and she determines that day will bring freedom or death. She’ll remain captive no more. Sassy Nightengale almost gives up hope until a company of Texas Rangers rides into Bold Eagle’s peace camp. She learns they’ve come for the negotiated exchange of stolen white women, except her name isn’t on their list. Purposing in her heart to escape captivity with her blue eyed, four- year-old that day, she does everything she can to be noticed.  Famed Texas Ranger Levi Baylor spots the red headed beauty and agrees to the war chief’s price adding his personal horse and weapon to the Republic agents’ offerings. The trade propels the couple on a trail of joy and sorrow. Sweet love blossoms but must be denied. His integrity and her faith in God keep them at arm’s length, not allowing even a kiss. Sassy’s still married to her son’s father, and Levi’s honor-bound to deliver her home—to her husband. Can their forbidden love be made holy? God hates divorce. Is it wrong to hope, expect Nightengale to relinquish his wife and son? Will Sassy and Levi find the redemption they seek for their troubled souls?  (Picture and description from Amazon)

The Sandcastle Sister, book #35

Lisa Wingate, you are a tricky one!  After just reading this book I thought Lisa was also a "deep" writer.  But this book tricked me!  It was a novella, related to these books.

New York editor Jen Gibbs knew when she bought Evan Hall's next blockbuster book, it would change her career. She didn't know it would change her life. But after being sent along on the European book tour, at Evan's request, she has made a promise she's not sure she can keep--she's crossed professional lines and accepted Evan's surprising engagement proposal. Now she's scared to death. In Jen's family, marriage represents the death of every dream a woman holds for herself.  Can the revelation of her mother's long-held secret open the doors to Jen's future and change her beliefs about life and love?  (Picture and description at Amazon)

Hole in My Life, book #34

I read a biography!  And this one was quite eye opening.  As a former children's librarian of sorts, I was familiar with his books about Joey Pigza and others.  His stories were filled with laughter and humor, and to read about his troubled youth made me sad.  But he learned his lesson, and it was through his time in jail that he really started focusing on writing.  Today his books have won many awards, including the coveted Newbery Award.

In the summer of 1971, Jack Gantos was an aspiring writer looking for adventure, cash for college tuition, and a way out of a dead-end job. For ten thousand dollars, he recklessly agreed to help sail a sixty-foot yacht loaded with a ton of hashish from the Virgin Islands to New York City, where he and his partners sold the drug until federal agents caught up with them. For his part in the conspiracy, Gantos was sentenced to serve up to six years in prison.  In Hole in My Life, this prizewinning author of over thirty books for young people confronts the period of struggle and confinement that marked the end of his own youth. On the surface, the narrative tumbles from one crazed moment to the next as Gantos pieces together the story of his restless final year of high school, his short-lived career as a criminal, and his time in prison. But running just beneath the action is the story of how Gantos – once he was locked up in a small, yellow-walled cell – moved from wanting to be a writer to writing, and how dedicating himself more fully to the thing he most wanted to do helped him endure and ultimately overcome the worst experience of his life. The Summer Kitchen, book #32

Lisa Wingate is always a toss up, she goes DEEP and often sad, and sometimes I regret starting one of her books.  As was the case of this one, but I had been home for over a week on a covid-cation and I already plowed through two books.  I had a hard copy of this one I got from my mom and decided to pick up.  Let's just say that last night I was up for WAAAAY too late on the edge of my seat wondering how it was going to end. :)

With her adopted son missing and the rest of her family increasingly estranged, SandraKaye Darden is drawn to the little pink house where her Uncle Poppy once provided security. But what begins for Sandra as a simple painting project to help sell the house becomes a secret venture that starts to change everything...Cass Blue is having trouble keeping food on the table since her mother died. When Sandra shows up with sandwiches for the neighborhood kids one day, Cass has no way of knowing that the meeting will lead to the creation of a place of refuge that could reunite a divided community.  In this moving story of second chances, two unlikely allies realize their ability to make a difference...and the power of what becomes known as the Summer Kitchen to nourish the soul. (picture and description at Amazon)

Of course, after I finished I realized it was book 2 in a series, but the nice thing about her series is that while they are related by a very thin thread, you can literally pick up any book in the series at any time and you don't feel out of the loop.

Chateau of Secrets, book #30

A courageous young noblewoman risks her life to hide French resistance fighters; seventy years later, her granddaughter visits the family’s abandoned chateau and uncovers shocking secrets from the past.  Gisèle Duchant guards a secret that could cost her life. Tunnels snake through the hill under her family’s medieval chateau in Normandy. Now, with Hitler’s army bearing down, her brother and several friends are hiding in the tunnels, resisting the German occupation of France.  But when German soldiers take over the family’s château, Gisèle is forced to host them as well—while harboring the resistance fighters right below their feet. Taking in a Jewish friend’s baby, she convinces the Nazis that it is her child, ultimately risking everything for the future of the child. When the German officers begin to suspect her deception, an unlikely hero rescues both her and the child.  A present day story weaves through the past one as Chloe Sauver, Gisèle’s granddaughter, arrives in Normandy. After calling off her engagement with a political candidate, Chloe pays a visit to the chateau to escape publicity and work with a documentary filmmaker, Riley, who has uncovered a fascinating story about Jews serving in Hitler’s army. Riley wants to research Chloe’s family history and the lives that were saved in the tunnels under their house in Normandy. Chloe is floored—her family isn’t Jewish, for one thing, and she doesn’t know anything about tunnels or the history of the house. But as she begins to explore the dark and winding passageways beneath the chateau, nothing can prepare her for the shock of what she and Riley discover…  With emotion and intrigue, Melanie Dobson brings World War II France to life in this beautiful novel about war, family, sacrifice, and the secrets of the past.  (picture and description from Amazon)

A Walk along the Beach, "book" #29

I put book in quotation marks above because while this IS a book, I listened to it on CD on my way over to east Tennessee last week.  Captivating, holding to the end, to say the least!

The Lakey sisters are perfect opposites. After their mother died and their father was lost in grief, Willa had no choice but to raise her sister, Harper, and their brother, Lucas. Then, as an adult, she put her own life on hold to nurse Harper through a terrifying illness. Now that Harper is better and the sisters are living as roommates, Willa has realized her dream of running her own bakery and coffee shop, bringing her special brand of caretaking to the whole Oceanside community. Harper, on the other hand, is always on the go. Overcoming a terrible illness has given her a new lease on life, and she does not intend to waste it. When Harper announces her plan to summit Mount Rainier, Willa fears she may be pushing herself too far. Harper, for her part, urges Willa to stop worrying and do something outside of her comfort zone - like taking a chance on love with a handsome new customer. Sean O'Malley is as charming as he is intriguing - a freelance photographer whose assignments take him to the ends of the earth. Soon Willa's falling for him in a way that is both exciting and terrifying. But life has taught Willa to hedge her bets, and she wonders whether the potential heartache is worth the risk. Life has more challenges in store for them all. But both sisters will discover that even in the darkest moments, family is everything. (picture and description from Amazon)

Next up I am actually trying to read two books at the same time, and my Bible, so I guess that counts as three?!?  Not sure I can do this, but we will try!

The Inheritance, book #28

Read another absolutely wonderful novel by my fav Tamara Alexander!  This was a stand alone (not in a series) but she never fails to entertain.

Determined to tame her fourteen-year-old younger brother’s rebellious streak, twenty-three-year-old McKenna Ashford accepts her cousin’s invitation to move west and start over. McKenna arrives only to find that her cousin and her cousin's husband have died, leaving their five-year-old daughter an orphan—and that life in Copper Creek, Colorado, is far from what she expected.  McKenna struggles with her sudden new role as the guardian of two children. Shouldering burdens beyond her years, McKenna tries to be the parent Robert needs instead of the older sister he resents. But her “untimely inheritance” challenges her resolve at every turn, while also offering a second chance to restore her sense of trust—and perhaps even her heart.
U.S. Marshal Wyatt Caradon is dedicated to bringing fugitives to justice, yet years of living on the trail have taken their toll, and he finds himself at a crossroads. He's brought countless men to justice, but he questions what lasting good he has accomplished. When his path intersects that of young Robert Ashford, Wyatt glimpses himself, years ago, in the boy's pride and arrogance. He also sees a boy without a firm hand in his life. His well-meant attempt to help Robert brings him face-to-face with the one situation he never wanted to encounter—and the one woman who holds the key to helping him find his future.  As McKenna struggles to let go of her independence and Wyatt considers opening his heart again, they discover an inheritance beyond imagination—but it will come at a price.  (picture and description at Amazon)

Find Your People, book #27

This summer while I was off on my half summer break ;) I felt a really calling to get more involved at church and meet new people.  I was also thinking about what on earth I'm going to do when my little people are gone:

I found out about this Bible Study some ladies at the church were doing and decided to jump in.  Was it scary at 55 to go to someone's house you had never been to before ~ where you know absolutely no one?  100%!!   But I did it and in the process made about 7 new friends!  We all bonded quickly as we all just dropped our facades and just called lonliness, hurt, fear, friendlessness what it is.  I was floored that during the first meeting we just laid all our pretenses down and jumped right in!

If you are feeling sad and lonely and friendless, I highly recommend you pick up this book and read it!  Pray over it, take it in, make it work for you!  Even though school/work has started back up, and I'm taking kids to college every week, I'm excited for September to get here to find a way to meet with my new friends and develop those deep friendships, even if they do live 30 mins away in Columbia!

In a world that’s both more connected and more isolating than ever before, we’re often tempted to do life alone, whether because we’re so busy or because relationships feel risky and hard. But science confirms that consistent, meaningful connection with others has a powerful impact on our well-being. We are meant to live known and loved. But so many are hiding behind emotional walls that we’re experiencing an epidemic of loneliness.

In Find Your People, bestselling author Jennie Allen draws on fascinating insights from science and history, timeless biblical truth, and vulnerable stories from her own life to help you:

• overcome the barriers to making new friends and learn to initiate with easy-to-follow steps
• find simple ways to press through awkward to get to authentic in conversations
• understand how conflict can strengthen relationships rather than destroy them
• identify the type of friend you are and the types of friends you need
• learn the five practical ingredients you need to have the type of friends you’ve always longed for

You were created to play, engage, adventure, and explore—with others. In Find Your People, you’ll discover exactly how to dive into the deep end and experience the full wonder of community. Because while the ache of loneliness is real, it doesn’t have to be your reality.  (Picture and description from Amazon)

If I Run ~ If I'm Found ~ If I Live, books #24-26

Oh Terri Blackstock, I have MISSED you!!!  It has been too long since I read one of her books, and it will NOT be this long again!!!

We are in the process of a little restart with our Book Club, and we wanted to get back to the heart of what we were about.  I decided to pick a Terri Blackstock murder mystery, since it had been so long since we read any of hers and I'm so glad I did! The thrill, the nonstop action, the forgiveness, repentence, love, restoration and justice.

Sadly, although we were only supposed to read book 1 in this series, Terri is known for leaving you hanging in all the books until the end.  So if you so pick up a book of hers, make sure you wait until the entire series is done or you will go bonkers.  Luckily I had purchased the set on my Kindle so I could just trudge on through.  Needless to say, I highly recommend this!!

Casey knows the truth. But it won’t set her free.  Casey Cox’s DNA is all over the crime scene. There’s no use talking to police; they’ve failed her abysmally before. She has to flee before she’s arrested . . . or worse. The truth doesn’t matter anymore.  But what is the truth? That’s the question haunting Dylan Roberts, the war-weary veteran hired to find Casey. PTSD has marked him damaged goods, but bringing Casey back can redeem him. Though the crime scene seems to tell the whole story, details of the murder aren’t adding up.  Casey Cox doesn’t fit the profile of a killer. But are Dylan’s skewed perceptions keeping him from being objective? If she isn’t guilty, why did she run?  Unraveling her past and the evidence that condemns her will take more time than he has, but as Dylan’s damaged soul intersects with hers, he is faced with two choices: the girl who occupies his every thought is a psychopathic killer . . . or a selfless hero. And the truth could be the most deadly weapon yet.  (picture and description from Amazon)

I can't wait to see what we might read next month ... or what I might jump into next! :)

Come Join Us!

Don't we look like a fun group to hang out with? (Above at Frothy Monkey)

(Left at Belmont Mansion)

As most of you know, I love books and people and coffee and this book club over the years has filled my cup every month with joy and laughter, and even tears when our beloved Terezia passed away unexpectedly.  Let me tell you a little history and how we got where we are today.

Back while Katie was not even in school yet (2007?2008?) a book club was started through Thompsons Station Church and called the Koinonia Book Club, which would focus on reading only Christian Fiction books.  There were probably about 10-15 ladies in it and we met during the day once a month at someone's house for a good while.  Well, then many of the ladies got jobs so the morning book club fell apart.  In the mean time, a night group had started with working ladies.  After taking a break, I decided I couldn't stand to be away and I decided Roger could handle the kids one night, so I decided to start going to the night book club.  That one met at a variety of coffee shops.  Over time, more people came and went and we ended up at BooksaMillion on Thursday nights where we would drink coffee and tea in Joe Muggs Cafe, discuss whatever book we read that month (for about 15-20 mins!) and catch up in each other's lives.  Then we would stroll back to the Christian Fiction section (when it had two whole rows!) and look for books that might have enough copies for all of us to buy.  We would all read the summaries of a few of them, then someone would pick one.

Time marched on, as they say, and our numbers again shrunk and grew as new people joined, then some dropped out due to life situations.  Before the pandemic hit, most of us had Kindles or Nooks and the physical book choice was not as big of a deal, so we started branching out to other places, which eventually led to meeting for dinner instead of just coffee sometimes.  And sometimes we would do fun stuff, like meet local authors when they had book signings or visit Belmont Mansion after reading books about it.

These days there are only about four or five of us, and although we are pretty tight, we'd love to have more ladies come join us!  This is not a stuffy, literature heavy club, it's more about sharing our love of reading, of God & Jesus, what He is doing in our lives, etc.  I have developed a "picker schedule" where there is a designated person who picks for the month, along with a suggested genre, but it could be anything that person wants.  We have read many common Christian authors, like Karen Kingsbury, Tamara Alexander, Melody Carlson, Tracie Peterson, Terri Blackstock, etc.  I have tried to go back and make a list of all the books we have read, but it is well over 200!  (If you go back through my blog here, pretty much most posts from 2013 on are strictly the books I have read, several from book club)

So, are you interested in joining us?

You do not have to:

Clean your house to host
Wear fancy clothes or makeup
READ THE BOOK (come anyway, but we think you'll get hooked and enjoy it more)

You do have to:

Like reading (I mean, it IS a book club)
Show up at least every few months so we know you are alive
Like hanging out with people

Our next meeting is THIS Thursday, July 21, at the Panera in Spring Hill by the Crossings.  We will meet at 6 for dinner, etc and probably stay til about 8.  This past month the book was Blackberry Summer by Raeann Thayne, but quite honestly I did not read it this month.  And guess what!  I'M STILL COMING!!

The book for next month (date undecided as of yet) is If I Run by Terri Blackstock.  Please feel free to email me, text me, call me, message me, whatever and let me know if you are interested.  It may be too late to come this week, but you could always pick up another month.  We typically meet every third Thursday, but in August I will be moving my baby girl to college that day so we will choose another week.

Again, just let me know!
